Great Research Universities Make Great Cities

In 1997, the Kentucky General Assembly gave higher education institutions a mandate – a public agenda to increase economic opportunity and the quality of life for the people in our communities.

The City of Louisville finds itself with academic challenges. According to the Greater Louisville Project, to become educationally competitive, the city must double the pace of improvement over the past two decades. And that’s where we come in.

The University of Louisville is a critical resource for improving economic development, social justice, racial harmony and an understanding of urban issues. The city draws on the energy of the University and, conversely, we reciprocate by supporting and engaging the city. Beyond that, we are spurring dramatic economic growth for the Commonwealth and the region. From new jobs, renowned advancements in medical science, bold new construction efforts attracting business start-ups, to the development of educated and talented graduates and post-graduates, the University of Louisville has changed inside and out. Today, we dedicate ourselves to meeting the challenges ahead and becoming the premier metropolitan research university that we are destined to be. Together with the people of this city as our partners, we will advance to realize this dream for our community and ourselves.

Now we are seeking the resources necessary to shape our own destiny, to fulfill our public mission, to achieve true distinction and to transform the course of learning and inquiry. We are steadfast in our belief that investing in higher education produces important and demonstrable returns for both the public and private sectors.
